Comment on Nordic Walking Poles vs Trekking Poles for Hiking by Pete Edwards

Walking with poles is the best!

Skiers deprived of snow have been ski walking and hill bounding with one-piece ski poles for decades. Pack packers found that walking with two poles radically reduced the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back.

Trekking poles evolved into 2-3 piece collapsible poles that would fit in packs. Unfortunately these twist-locking and flip-locking adjustable length/telescoping/collapsible length poles did NOT prove to be as user friendly and durable as a one-piece ski pole. Trekking poles have old fashion loop straps and are heavier typically by design in an attempt to be more durable.

Then came Nordic Walking and a variety of different poles, tips and straps (even some with no straps). Again, one-piece Nordic Walking Poles are safer, lighter and more durable than twist-lock and flip-lock poles. REAL Nordic Walking Poles are also equipped with fingerless glove type straps. The best Nordic Walking Straps are patented by the Salomon Ski Company. One-piece poles equipped with REAL Nordic Walking Straps have been tested and proven to be superior in the city, in the country and up in the mountains.

Perfect length poles help us to automatically walk with a super straight back - better walking posture is biomechanically a good thing. This improved walking posture when combined with the unique 4-Wheel-Drive type action of walking with poles radically reduces the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back. Nordic Walking is low impact and yet provides a highly effective workout - burning more calories and working more muscle groups than regular walking.

Twist-locking and flip-locking poles are not designed for every day use. Seniors and individuals with balance issues should also avoid cheap twist-locking poles.

Skiers use one-piece poles because they are lighter, strong and user-friendly.
